If I ever needed a Shepherd, Lord,

Well, it seems I cannot listen.
I don’t even know what I need,
it appears I cannot follow
a Shepherd I can’t see.

But I hear the voice of the Shepherd,
I can feel the beat of his heart
pounding out a gentle rhythm
“Come exactly as you are.
I will teach you how to listen,
for I’ve known just how you feel.
It is Me you’re safe to follow,
and in Me you’re safe to heal.
If it is not safe to listen,
if you can’t come with your need,
it will never be safe to follow,
it will never be safe to lead.”

Jesus sweeps away the wreckage
of my shallow, listless life,
and I am hidden in the shelter
of the Shepherd of Shadai.
He still leads me to living waters,
and he wipes each tear from my eyes.
He’s the Lamb who’s also the Shepherd,
the Shepherd of Shadai.
